KIND MIND INITIATIVE

In order for children to become healthy, well adjusted, productive societal members, there are several key developmental areas that should be engaged.

These include academic, cognitive, social, emotional, moral and physical development.

The KIND MIND Initiative intends to foster the holistic development of children by addressing the above mentioned developmental needs.

  • The program incorporates four major components and newly implemented factor.
Literacy Competency, Social Education, Martial Arts Practice, Exploratory Sessions and Parent/Guardian Education & Engagement.

SOCIAL

EDUCATION

This aims to encourage positive behavioral changes amongst participants by addressing their social, emotional &  moral developmental needs.

  • Positive behaviors can be described as observable skills that “increase the likelihood of success and personal satisfaction in normative academic, social, recreational, community, and family settings”.

  • Weekly sessions include a range of youth-friendly activities geared toward:

    • Empowering participants

    • Providing opportunities to adopt and exhibit the expected positive values and behavioral changes

  • This is facilitated through The KIND Mindset.

REMEDIAL

MATHEMATICS

"There is a difference between not knowing, and not knowing yet."

- Shelia Tosias

  • Mathematics is an essential skill and a core part of a sound education for al, yet many children who need extra attention are left behind by the system.

  • KIND seeks to offer a solution for this by offering foundational mathematics classes for primary school children.

  • The program is open to all primary school children who require work and attention on the foundational basics of the subject.

MARTIAL

ARTS

"Train the mind not the body;

 practice makers permanent."

CONDUCTED BY
THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MARTIAL ARTS.

MARTIAL ARTS FOCUSES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT MINDSET.

  • It serves as a vehicle to promote a disciplined attitude and capacity building.

  • Training presents opportunities for participants to demonstrate self-control, focus, goal achievement and leadership skills.

EXPLORATORY LEARNING

SESSIONS

"Self-study, self-exploration, self-empowerment; these are the virtues of a great education."

- Suman Rai

  • These exploratory sessions seek to introduce our students to topics in the arts, music, culture and other fun, exciting areas of learning.

  • We believe that a well-rounded education comprises of not only traditional subjects and topics, but also an exploration of many diverse areas of interest.

DRAMA

"Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon."

  • Partic

  • The importance of drama and performing arts in education is significant. Whether children have the opportunity to perform in theatre productions or help out behind the scenes, studying Drama and Performing Arts not only engages with the creative side of the brain, it also provides an ideal balance in students’ patterns of study

  • Children have the opportunity to celebrate the richness and depth of human expression in all of its forms. Through creative expression students learn to comprehend our world better and are therefore better equipped to navigate the challenges they might be faced with.

  • This program allows an avenue to develop cognitive abilities that complement study in other disciplines. Students learn to approach situations in an array of different manners which can help to develop creative thinking and new study techniques.

  • Drama builds confidence which benefits public speaking opportunities. The talent that students discover through the Arts can form habits which transcend all areas of study.

LITERACY

COMPETENCY

DANCE

"If you stumble, make it a part of your dance."

  • KIND is fortunate to have formed a strategic partnership with DanceBox TT, another local NGO. They are dedicated to making all types of dance education more accessible to youths.

  • Through this partnership, KIND is able to offer dance to all KMI participants. KMI Dance sessions give participants a chance to keep fit and explore culture in a fun and engaging way.

PARENT/GUARDIAN EDUCATION & ENGAGEMENT

The holistic development of children depends not only on the programs they attend, but also the support they get at home from parents and guardians.

  • These modules are designed to encourage open dialogue between parents/guardians &KMI facilitators.

  • They help to equip them with key insights to help them better support their kids.

  • This initiative is powered by partners including Bocas Lit Festival, the Brown Cotton Foundation, Trinidad Theatre Workshop, National Drama Association of Trinidad & Tobago, The 2 cents Movement, Laventille Rhythm Section, NIHERST, D Mad Company, Dance Box TT, Andrew Sport & Entertainment, National Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Programme, Families in Action and Cybersafe TT.

Literacy is the ability to “read, view, write, design, speak and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and make sense of one’s environment."

  • Literacy not only impacts how well children are able to perform academically or how well they function in everyday life, but also how well adjusted or successful they become.

  • In 2017, the Minister of Education of T&T stated that “Over 2,000 students scored below 30% in the Secondary Entrance Assessment Exam”. This accounts for approximately 11% of primary school students who wrote the exam that are not performing as they should.

    • KIND recognizes this as an opportunity to intervene & contribute to the well-being of children and address their academic needs.

  • The literacy component of this program provides support for children who are not as proficient as they should be for their age; our aim is to increase their chances of academic improvement and success.

    • Participants are assessed by qualified tutors to determine current literacy levels, then a plan of action is determined & implemented by tutors.
